Historically, the music industry has produced some great performers; Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, the list is endless... In recent years, music fans have been fascinated by club DJs spinning their decks and scratching. These days, we see a lot of DJs behind a laptop, using a mouse instead of a cross-fader. This seems to be a long way from traditional performance.
MI7 Japan challenges you to break the mould.
The Producers Conference in Tokyo will be focused on the next generation of cutting edge music software and controller devices in music and video - Reason, ReCycle, Audio Cubes, Lemur; putting the performance back in performance.
CONFERENCE FEATURES
TSUYOSHI KONO, also known as "DJ Top Bill" is a hip hop DJ, producer and engineer in Japan. His music style is based on old-school hip hop, but he's not afraid to experiment. He has released several albums on Japan's long established hip hop label "Mary Joy Recording".
SHIN NISHIMURA is one of Japan's leading DJs. His career started with his own PLUS party in Shanghai, building up a scene where there previously was none. Since then, he's played at MAYDAY in Germany, and started his own PLUS TOKYO club at home in Japan. In 2002 He co-headlined at WIRE in Tokyo after Takkyu Ishino and Ken Ishii, and in 2004, he launched his own label PLUS RECORDS, which now has it's own sub-label DEKA TRAXXX. His latest release "Live Recorded Live Set at PLUS TOKYO" came out in March, and his next single will be released on MEZZOTINTO RECORDS(FR). He also has an electro-pop / house side project performing as FARBE.
Erin and May of RAW-REC describe themselves as a "womens mellow rap unit", and perform mainly in the Tokyo area. Erin's alto and May's cute "cartoon-ish" voice blend and harmonise well. And they're no slouches on the dance floor, either.
MORLEY ROBERTSON is a late-night radio talkshow DJ on Tokyo's famous "J-Wave" station. He's been called "the most creative, brilliant, and challenging voice in Japan's popular media today". He has an impressive academic career, too; having been accepted to study at Tokyo University and five US universities, he eventually graduated from Harvard. He's also known and respected as a journalist and musician.
YOSHIHIRO OKUDAIRA is a Japanese composer/VJ. He started writing music after being influenced by Isao Tomita and Kitaro as a child. Since then, he has been associated with the cutting edge of computer music production.
